Somatic Therapy
Somatic Therapy offers key emotional intelligence skills to decrease anxiety and depression by learning to identifying how your emotions show up in your body through somatic sensations. The tools developed through this method can heighten awareness of your internal experience, both emotional and physiological, and help you respond to stressors in a healthier way.
Somatic awareness is a "bottom-up" approach that allows you to connect with memories at a deeper, more efficient level. Post-traumatic stress symptoms result when the fight or flight response was not later discharged, creating an "unfinished circuit" in the limbic system. By tuning into your body's sensations, and opportunity is created to reopen that circuit in present time and provide the body with the safety signals it needs to downshift ongoing physiological reactions. In doing so, shifts in negative beliefs created by a traumatic event tend to naturally take place as well.
Somatic awareness plays an integral role in the EMDR process and Art Therapy helps to further explore and process what is sensed in the body.
